  1. Dear Dilara Begum Jolly,

Though I was first introduced to your art through the gorgeous cover painting on Tarfia Faizullah’s Seam, my friend reintroduced me to your work. I am in love with your female stories series, especially Tader Bola 4. I would love to use your painting for the cover of my debut poetry collection The Things a Body Might Become (forthcoming July 2017). I could send you my manuscript, if you’d like, so that you might see how the collection echoes the themes of your art.

Like your own artwork, the poems in The Things a Body Might Become respond to local and global cases of abuse against women and celebrate/elevate the matriarch. Though I am enamored by several of your paintings, I am most drawn to Tader Bola 4 because of its central image: the lotus-like ovary with the women’s heads. Because the title and poems explore body, I want an image that celebrates women’s bodies/sex and the idea of matrilineage and suggests that women endure and survive.

I’m anticipating an initial press run of 800-1000 copies, but this number is dependent on my presale orders, which have not yet taken place. I am happy to offer you an honorarium for the use of your painting. What would you consider to be fair?

Also, I realize that some painters have rules/requests regarding the use their work, like “no lettering on the font” or “no cropping.” I would like to abide by whatever your requests are so that I might give the cover designer some parameters/freedoms.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I thank you for considering my request.

    Sincerely,

    Emari DiGiorgio
